Currimundi, located on the northern edge of Caloundra in the Sunshine Coast, derives its name from the local Aboriginal word "Garrimundi" or "Girrimundi," meaning 'Place of flying foxes.' Awarded "Queensland's Cleanest Beach" in 2004, Currimundi is a true gem among the Sunshine Coast’s stunning beach destinations. It features a natural lake connected to a long, pristine surf beach, making it an ideal spot for both short visits and extended stays.
The expansive lake is perfect for swimming and enjoying the sandy shores, with extensive parks and walkways nearby for leisurely strolls before or after a swim. The lake is also great for canoeing, kayaking, and paddling, with fishing opportunities from the shore or a small boat.
The northern shore of Lake Currimundi remains a protected area, showcasing the region's natural beauty. The Currimundi Lake Conservation Park offers an untouched coastline and wallum heath, with vibrant wildflowers in early spring. This area is perfect for picnicking, birdwatching, nature walks, and enjoying scenic views from the lookout. The first 130 metres of the walking track to the lake lookout are wheelchair accessible, making it a welcoming destination for all visitors.

Currimundi Lake and Surf Beach
Currimundi Lake beach has surf with wide beaches and a unique shallow inlet where the lake enters the ocean: is perfect for smaller kids, and patrolled (surf only), at holiday times. Should you choose a holiday unit without a pool, Caloundra has a magnificent public pool complex, with a heated indoor pool, a heated (until end of September) 25m and 50m outdoor lap pools, and a toddlers’ pool, all in a picnic garden setting. Change rooms, toilets, a gym, showers and a snack bar are provided, and one of the best skate parks in Australia also in the grounds if that is of interest to some members of the family.
Currimundi Lake
Currimundi Lake is perfect for families -shady trees which hang over the beach. It calm and mostly shallow water for paddling in and a vast expense of sand for digging in.
People enjoy the lake by rowing boats, canoeing, kayaking, stand up paddle boarding and swimming. If you don’t have your own equipment you can hire it.
The lake is a popular fishing spot, and you may be lucky enough to snag a whiting or bream.
Currimundi Parks and Playgrounds
Right on the Currimundi foreshore in the Cliff Hargreaves Park and Playground with toilet, BBQ and picnic facilities. the playground area is lit at night until 9pm, making it perfect for a BBQ dinner by the beach. A short walk from Currimundi lake is the Grahame Stewart Park on Currimundi Road. This park offers pitch, basketball court, fenced playground and children’s bike track, complete with road markings, signage and obstacle course.
Currimundi Lake Conservation Park
On the northern shore of Lake Currimundi is an area protected from development that showcases the natural beauty of the area. The Currimundi Lake Conservation Park is an unspoilt area of coastline and wallum heath. Check out the native wildflowers in early Spring. Enjoy picnicking, birdwatching and studying nature, taking long bushwalks and admiring the views from the lookout. People in wheelchairs can use the first 130 metres of the walking track to the lake lookout.
